Respite Provider List Available to Members of The Arc
The Arc of Harrisonburg and Rockingham office
now has a list of respite providers who have completed The
Arc’s specialized 12-hour training course and passed a
criminal background check. The Arc will offer parents the
names of several trained providers after receiving a signed
copy of the Release of Liability Form that releases The Arc
of Harrisonburg and Rockingham Inc. from liability arising
from the care of their son/daughter by the caregiver.
Parents are instructed to interview a potential caregiver
and check references as necessary to determine the skill
level and competence of the respite provider. Parents using
the respite registry will be sent a booklet called About
Our Family for them to fill out to let the respite
provider know information such as the household routine, how
best to relate to the individual, who to contact in an
emergency, etc.
Contact The Arc office to receive the paperwork. Parents
using the service are encouraged to give The Arc feedback on their
experiences with the new program. Payment arrangements for respite services
will be between the individual provider and the family.
DMHMRSAS Name
Change
In the 2009 Session, the General Assembly passed legislation to change
the name of the Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation, and
Substance Abuse Services to the Department of Behavioral Health and
Developmental Services. The new name eliminates the term retardation,
more broadly reflects the department's mission, and allows flexibility to
grow into other service areas like autism. The name change was effective on
July 1, 2009.
